SouthernGothic's Book Reviews

I love books of all sorts. I have books on the brain from the time I wake up, till my tired ole ass falls asleep. I grew up without a television in my room, we were fairly poor folks that relied on my daddy working the mines and driving his coal truck. The jobs were scarce at that time in the 80's and daddy was out of work a lot.My source of entertainment was...books. That stuck with me. Now, with the option of a tv sitting in my living room, the only thing I use it for is to play "music or sounds to read to" in the background. My favorite genre has always been southern horror, Southern gothic, appalachian horror, or paranormal. I live in the south and I'm sure that's the reason for a lot of the appeal. The characters always seem like someone I know. Someone down the road or up in the holler. I also love grit lit. Thrillers and mysteries hold my interest if they are well written. Donald Ray Pollock, David Joy, Ron Rash, Benjamin Whitmer, Tiffany McDaniels, Jesmyn Ward are my favorite authors. I also like to review books. My reviews are short, sweet, and to the point. I don't do long drawn out retellings of the synopsis. I feel those kind of reviews can be spoilers. I just simply inform the reader of the main reasons I liked or disliked a book without giving away too much. That's the kind of book reviews I enjoy reading and put my faith in, so I try to do the same. The reviews that just tell what I have already read in the synopsis, I tend to skip over or scan through. I want to know "why" you liked the book, not a book report. Well, that's a wee bit about me. Now I'm off to read some. Y'all come back now, ya hear?!?
